wobble head curries

When we heard the news that there was a new Indian restaurant opening in our local neighbor-hood, we decided we had best head on down and check it out. Who wouldn’t want a place just 5 minutes from home? The venue itself, we had been into before and we were quite surprised to see how much it had changed with a fresh new look and a lot more room for patrons to stay and eat rather than take-away.

Okay, okay, I’m getting on with it - The food. So, what did we try this time? A couple of old favourites, (how better to compare) and a couple of dishes we hadn’t had before and I have to say I was very pleased with our selection.

Cheese & Chilli Naan

Cheese Naan

Fried Fish Entrée – Amritsari style. Fish marinated in spices with a hint of carom seeds and fried.

Tandori Chicken – Whole chicken pieces marinated overnight in Indian spices and yoghurt cooked in clay oven.

Goat Biryani – Spiced up rice cooked with goat, fresh mint, dry fruits, and yoghurt served with Raita.

Butter Chicken – Marinate chicken pieces half cooked in Tandoor and slowly simmered in rich tomato and cream based makhan (butter) sauce finished with almond flakes.

The absolute stand out (and perhaps even a new all-time favourite choice) was the Goat Biryani. For a dish that wasn’t in a sauce or gravy, I couldn’t believe how many flavours were packed into that bowl. The goat itself was pull-apart soft and juicy, with the added bonus of no bones, and with each mouthful I could taste something new.

Whilst you can’t have a “mild” biryani, the heat was not overpowering and Sharon even managed to try it without complaint. (Of course that meant I missed the entertainment of watching the watering eyes and face fanning show, but there’s always next time J).

The flavour of the fish entrée was delicious and the plumply stuffed Naan bread was definitely a winner. What we didn’t finish we took home and that Chilli Naan made a fantastic afternoon snack the next day.

Our waiter was friendly and very eager to please and filled us in on the improvements planned for restaurant in the near future. Currently a BYO, they are in the process of getting a liquor license and also plan on extending to an outside dining area.

The cost for two for the evening was $96.00 including drinks (softies this time). Everything we had was packed full of flavour and based on what we tried, I reckon I’ll be back!
