walloon hotel - food review

Chantel from My Local Market Directory felt it was quite remiss of me to not have checked out the food at her local eatery – The Walloon Hotel – so she invited me out to rectify that situation.

When I arrived, we sat in the main bar and had a coldie before we entered the main restaurant. I was pleased to note that they had a couple of my favourite beers on tap. I admit I have become a bit of a beer snob but don’t hold that against me. Doing my job does tend to leave me spoiled for choice.

I was certainly glad I arrived early as, whilst I was ordering my food, the line was growing steadily. I even spotted a couple of familiar faces.

So……………..what did we pull off the menu this time.

ENTRÉE

Buttermilk Popcorn Chicken – South west spiced chicken pieces served with siracha aioli $14.95

MAINS

Pork Belly – Slow cooked pork belly, steamed baby corn, broccoli, carrot and sugar snap peas, all served on top of creamy mashed potato and topped with a sweet apply and onion sauce. $28.90

Chicken Parmigiana (all varieties) $24.95

I, personally, am not a fan of the old oversized chicken nugget covered in cheese and tomato paste or the many other varieties, but this dish has been going strong since the 70’s, so long live the Chicken Parmi!

Actually, the parmi’s were flying out of the kitchen at a rate of knots and everyone seemed to enjoy them immensely.

I however, did not miss out on my poultry delights (see what I did there) and went with the chicken popcorn. These were really tasty and I could have eaten plenty more. The aioli had a nice kick to it and the chicken itself was a good bite size. Definitely worth trying.

The Pork Belly was a good, generous serve and although maybe not as “cheffy” as others that I have tasted, it was still bloody good. Comparing apples with apples, for pub food this was really, really good and I absolutely cleaned the plate. Once again, I really would have liked to have a crack at dessert, but unfortunately I didn’t want to ruin a good meal by over-stuffing myself.

I don’t know if the menu will change after the planned renovations for this particular venue, but if it does, watch this space, and I will make a point of heading back to Walloon and reporting my findings.
