two french chefs

Deciding to drop into the Overflow Estate on our way back from Beaudesert turned out to be quite the food adventure. With no notion of what was at the Estate, we pulled in anticipating perhaps a little wine tasting, your average café and a look around the estate that was established in 1895. Not quite! On entry we were greeted by wait staff who asked if we were wanting to eat in the restaurant or would like to venture to the outside Lawn Bar where they had a small café. I’m sure we looked somewhat bewildered, so we were given both menus to peruse, and were advised that the restaurant had a fixed price menu for either two or three courses. One look at that menu and the decision was made - let’s bite the bullet and have ourselves a fancy French restaurant meal.

The atmosphere at the restaurant is very laid back. Although dressed in jeans, joggers and a t-shirt, we felt at home in no time, looking out at the water view and listening to the live entertainment. The waitress was friendly and down to earth. She helped with the meal and wine selection and answered all of my questions about the vineyard and restaurant. What did we end up having? We elected to just have two courses, knowing that we had another stop to make before we headed home.

After much deliberation, we chose entrée and mains of: Crispy slow cooked pork belly, chimichurri Mayo; Snails & King Mushroom Vol au vent in Garlic Butter Sauce; Barramundi Ballotine, Sweet Potato Mash; Sand Crab Lasagne with a Creamy Crustacean Sauce;

We added a Baguette with Truffle butter, as recommended by our waitress - to soak up the delicious sauce from the crab, she said.

Never in a million years did I think that I would be willing to eat a snail but, when Dalase handed one over having already nearly finished his entrée, I figured why not? (I must admit, I did check that it was nothing like the texture of an oyster first).

The smell from the garlic butter sauce was fantastic, so with no issues there I popped it on in. Much to my delight it was really good, flavoursome and not chewy at all (and, just by the way, no, they don’t taste like dirt!) I’d even go so far as to say that I would have this dish again.

The pork belly was crunchy and matched perfectly with the chimichurri mayonnaise and the barramundi was beautifully presented and was gone in no time at all, but the absolute winner for lunch was the Sand Crab Lasagne. The waitress was 100% accurate in her suggestion that we wouldn’t want to leave behind any of that sauce. Not a hint was left on the plate at the end of the meal.

Would we recommend that you make the trip to the Two French Chefs restaurant? Absolutely, we would. What a beautiful place for a romantic lunch or dinner for two. Open to the air and with a glorious view and food that just needs to be tasted, you should make a booking and enjoy the experience.
