Sometimes a restaurant pops up on your radar and you think to yourself “Ooo, I want to go there”. For us, that happens quite a lot and, unfortunately, many are just too far away so we have to deny ourselves for the time being.
So, when The Plate appeared on our page and then we found that it was attached to a deli called The Paddock AND the Bone Idol Brewery, we felt it was time to go the extra distance to Toowoomba for our night out. Of course, we decided to go early and have a look around (who doesn’t love a good day trip) and finish off with a meal.
Since we arrived a little early for our booking, we had a quick look around the deli first. I can see a return visit with a cooler bag in our future. A staff member asked us if we had booked in specifically to try out the brand new menu to be launched that night. We hadn’t, but we were happy to be the guinea pigs.
After much deliberation (there were too many tempting options), we decided on:
Farm Yard Board - Pork Belly bites, BBQ Lamb ribs, Bird tails, Trio of sauces
(Chilli & Herb, Mustard Mayo, Pear and Ginger) $ 38.00
Dry Aged Rump - Jacks Creek MB3+ Black Angus Rump 350g 50 day dry aged, grain fed up to 130 days with Bone Stock Jus $ 59.00
Grain Fed Kilcoy “Ebony” MB2+ Black Angus 250 gm Rump – with thick fries and stir fried vegetables and Port & Mushroom Gravy $ 40.00
Whilst the steaks were fantastic, the highlight for the evening was the Farm Yard Board. Big enough for two, there was not one single item on the plate that was not absolutely perfect. Visually impressive with tasty morsels for dipping (not that they couldn’t hold their own). The bird tails (aka pope’s noses) were cleverly seasoned.
What an ingenious way to present my favourite piece of the chicken and I have never seen this before! Good on them for using the whole animal. Now, just in case there wasn’t enough flavour in the pork belly and ribs on their own, there was that Pear and Ginger sauce. Now that’s stepping it up! Why have apple sauce when you can have pear – love, love, love it.
The staff that looked after us from the moment we arrived until the moment we left were absolute rock-stars. I can see this place being a great spot for couples going out on a date or for a girls night out (there were some interesting cocktails to be tried at the brewery).
For me I’d love to round up a couple of mates and have a great meal and a beer or three. Thoroughly impressed and I can’t wait to go back.
