the peak pub - peaks crossing

What’s better than traditional pub food after a cold and windy afternoon while you’re out and about? We called into the pub at Peak Crossing on the way home to have a quick feed. I must admit, it’s been a while since I’ve had a meal at the peak pub, but I recalled the last time when I had a steak sandwich that was to die for, so we decided to stop in again.


Just as a side note for you history buffs, the original pub on this site burned down (I don’t know when – do you?) and whilst the existing pub was being built, beer was served in the old shed that still sits behind the pub. How cool is that.

Now, onto the food.


So – when was the last time you saw a prawn cocktail on the menu? Right there, before my eyes, something I hadn’t had for such a long time that I just had to order it, purely for the nostalgia. I was a little disappointed it didn’t come out served in the 1970’s style cocktail glass with the king prawn riding the rim, but hey, let’s compare apples with apples shall we. I was absolutely delighted to be presented with my cocktail.


A generous serving of prawns and lettuce, swimming around in a delicious seafood cocktail sauce and a slice of fresh lemon to top it all off. It definitely tickled my nostalgic funny bone and I reckon I’ll be lining up for another one of those.


Let’s talk about that beautiful lamb shank. Absolutely gorgeous, slow cooked, melt in your mouth, tender as you please lamb shank, accompanied by properly cooked vegetables (you can tell by the crisp colours in the photos that they were cooked perfectly) and that mash – what a delight. I’ve been to two establishments this week that have had fantastic mashed potato and I’ll tell you about the other one soon.


On a side note – is it odd that I’m excited about mashed potato? I really would have loved a piece of good old, fresh bread and butter to mop up the gravy and I would’ve been grinning like a Cheshire cat.



It’s hard to go past the humble rissoles and gravy when you’ve been out in the cold and though I only got to have a small taste of Sharon’s choice, I must say it was damned fine.


All in all a great traditional Aussie pub feed at fair dinkum prices.

Rissoles - 2 x homemade rissoles in gravy with vegetables or chips and salad $15.00


Lamb Shank - Lamb shank served with your choice of chips and salad or vegetables and mash $24.00
