darra

If you have seen our recent Facebook video, you will know that we recently visited Darra, which is on the Ipswich to Brisbane train line. For me, Darra is a neat little food hub and I promise you, if you go for a visit, you definitely won’t starve!

Before I go any further about that however, here’s a couple of interesting points I found out about Darra:

· Darra originally encompassed an area that included Sumner, which only became its’ own suburb in 1969.

· Vietnamese refugees began settling in Darra in 1975.

· Some say Darra could have come from the from the aboriginal word for stones, however there is a stronger link to the name coming from Scotland.

· In 1866, there was a sailing ship named Darra, which was launched from Aberdeen to India. Around a year later it was reported to be taking passengers from London to Australia. (More details here https://rihghistory.org.au/our-suburbs/darra)

· Darra exists because of the railway. It grew initially due to timber cutters and cement and there is even a book that you can buy called Darra By Decade 1820 – 2010.

· Camp Darra was located off Archerfield Road and was the location of the US Army Ordinance Depot.

As you can tell, with just a small google search, there’s a lot more to Darra than you might first have thought. Who knew?

For me, however, Darra is a food adventure. I really enjoy perusing the Asian grocery shops where I can find things I’ve never seen before, and am eager to try, and some that leave me scratching my head. If I’m not eager to cook myself, well, there’s plenty of fantastic restaurants and cafés to try out.

Being such a little bloke 😉, I do tend to feel a bit like a tourist whenever I visit Darra, but I still make friends.

Get on out there and have a look for yourself.
