cucina la biancha

An out of the way, intimate restaurant in Augustine Heights is what we found this week when we decided to go out for pizza. Tucked away in the corner of the shopping centre was Cucina La Biancha.

With a good Italian food menu and a liquor license, it turned out to be a lovely evening out for the two of us. Indoor and outdoor heaters, dimmed lights and great service from our bubbly waitress, lead to a quite romantic feel.

So, what about the food?

For entrée we chose:

Nona’s Polopetti – Nonas style meatballs, Napoli sauce, bocconcini, basil & crusty dipping bread $18.00

These meatballs were herby but not too herby (I don’t know what the technical term is but boy, they were tasty). A beautiful rich Italian sauce was certainly a good way to warm you up as winter tries to make its’ exit.

Calamari Fritti – Salt & pepper squid, lemon, aioli and rocket $17.00

A classic done well, tasty and tender.

The Godfather of Calabria Pizza – Tomato sugo, pepperoni, spicy “Nduja” (Calabrian salami paste), olives, roasted capsicums, mozzarella, rocket and shaved grana $25.00

Mr Potato Head Pizza – Potatoes, rosemary, red peppers, pumpkin, pesto aioli, seeds & nuts and mozzarella $24.50

Wood-fired and just that little bit fancy. These were very enjoyable and Sharon was able to eat the spicy one too, so you don’t have to worry about needing a glass of milk on hand to put out the fire. Oh, and if you don’t finish it all – there’s a handy pizza box to take home the leftovers to enjoy the next day.

I tried out a new ale, which was a SlipStream Billy Cart Rye Pale Ale (3.4%) which I thoroughly enjoyed and Sharon had the Tread Softly Australian Moscato (I see a bottle of this miraculously appearing in our fridge in the near future).

One recommendation for those of you who are planning on checking out this restaurant – we would suggest that you just order the one pizza per couple and leave room for dessert as well because they looked great too.
