We decided to venture to the other side of town (for all you folk who say I live at CSI, I do visit other venues and headed to Brothers Leagues Club. I wanted to know if they could produce a man-sized meal and, I have to say, my challenge was met and it even came with a pep talk.
But, before we go there, we need to talk about the entrée. A generous serving of pork belly that looked good, smelled good and tasted good. The addition of the crushed nuts was a bit of a surprise and added that extra texture and crunch. I was really pleased to see pork belly served in this way. It was obvious that some real thought had gone into this dish. Alright, let’s get to the main event – Ding Ding! I have to say, when the tray came out with not one, but two staff members, I was perhaps a little overwhelmed. It definitely came with the wow factor, that’s for sure.
The lady who placed the meal in front of me must have noticed this and she assured me that it was okay, I didn’t need to finish it all and I could take a portion home if I needed to.
I took a deep breath, picked up my knife and fork and was comforted by the second waitress who told me she believed in me and even gave me a pat on the head.
“It’s gonna take two pints of ale to wash this one down”, I exclaimed to the missus and I dove in, starting with the house made coleslaw, golden fried chips and the wonderful chimmi churri.
Onto the spare ribs and they were soon gone, followed by the slow cooked beef (which was on the plate but not on the menu – not that I didn’t appreciate it) and then to one of my favourite things, the chicken wings. Sticky and sweet, they were quite delicious but a little too sweet for my liking, possibly on account of all of the other sweet sauces on the plate. It would have been nice to perhaps have a pickle or something acidic to break up all of that sweetness.
Flash Fried Pork Belly with peanut satay sauce $20.00
Salt & Pepper Squid with lime and coriander aioli $17.00
Roast of the day – Beef $18.00
Low & Slow Plate – with chilli plum spare ribs, sticky wings, slaw, chips, chimmi churri, smoky bbq sauce $40.00
So boys, if you’re up for a challenge and wondering if you can get a man sized meal at the leagues club, bloody oath you can and the staff are pretty bloody awesome too.
We haven’t been to this venue for quite some time and it’s a lot flashier than I remember too - so, it’s two thumbs up from me. Get out there and check it out for yourself.
