brisbane valley tavern, fernvale - food review

What else do you do on a run-around Friday?

After a trip to physio (recovery going well and I’m keen to get back out into the field that’s for sure), and in for a booster with Bob and Todd at Terry White Chemist, Sharon and I decided to take a little drive out to Lowood to pick up some supplies from M & K Butcher Brothers for a home cooked meal.

Would you believe a professional chef is coming to cook for us to help with an upcoming 2 hour circle project? (But more about that another day – watch this space).

Whilst driving through Fernvale we decided to stop for a bite to eat at the restaurant of our long time sponsor, Brisbane Valley Tavern, before the meat pick up.

So, what’s for lunch?

I, myself ordered the Bowl of Chicken wings for entrée and the USA Ribs for main.

Bowl of Chicken Wings – fried and tossed in your choice of sauce (we chose honey soy) $13.90

USA Baby Back Pork Ribs – Glazed in Baby Rays hickory and brown sugar BBQ sauce. I opted for mashed potato and vegetables. – Half rack $23.90

Sharon, however, decided to go totally off script and ordered Calamari for entrée and Dessert for mains. Is that against the rules? I don’t suppose so. We were enjoying each other’s company and some great food, so ………………..

Chilli & Lime Calamari, served with aioli and lemon $13.90

Lemon Meringue Pancakes served with homemade lemon curd and topped with vanilla icecream and meringue bits

$13.90

We thought we’d share the entrees and we both had quite a bit to say about the Calamari. Something a little different from the normal, it was not battered and was incredibly tasty and soft. The chicken wings were a generous serve and I thought the honey soy sauce was great.

I often find honey soy sauce a little too sweet for my taste, but these were really good.

Boy am I glad I didn’t order the full rack. With the vegetables and homestyle mash, it was definitely a full sized meal as it was. My favourite was the caramelization of the sauce on the meat which just fell off the bone. I kept going back for more and more, even though I knew I was full. Very “moreish”, but I couldn’t finish it. I will definitely order that again and highly recommend it.

Last, but not least, the pancakes. Once again, I didn’t get a look in (not that I would have been able to fit any more in). A meal in itself, Sharon was very glad she didn’t order a main first.

To be honest, she could probably have foregone the entrée and still have been adequately fed. Beautifully presented with the lemon curd sprinkled with crushed meringue, Sharon also found it difficult to accept the fact that she was not going to be able to clean her plate.

All in all, a fantastic lunch with quality food and reasonable prices.
